Newbury, n.h. — The Newport High boys soccer team snapped its 34-game losing streak on Tuesday, downing nearby NHIAA Division IV neighbor Mount Royal, 4-1, at Fisher Field. The Tigers rejoined state competition two years ago and were winless since, but Newport improved to 1-2 this season with their most recent result. “This was a big up for the kids,” said first-year coach Caleb Godwin, a 1998 Sunapee High graduate who previously coached in Newport’s recreation program. “They’re at a level now where they feel they’re competitive.” Mount Royal scored in the 15th minute, but Ben Gallagher and Cooper Skarin answered for the visitors before halftime. Brayden Kraft tallied after the intermission, and Isaac Lafayette closed the scoring off a Mason Martell corner kick. Garrett Harold made 10 saves for Newport, which began the season with only 12 players before five more joined after the start of school. The Tigers (1-2), who played the past two seasons in NHIAA Division III, had been outscored, 257-13, since the start of the 2016 season until Tuesday’s match. Mount Royal (0-3) is a first-year varsity program. “They were talking and passing and getting to the right areas,” Godwin said of the Tigers. “This was the best they’ve worked as a team.” Both squads return to action on Friday, the Knights at Pittsburg-Canaan and the Tigers at home to Groveton.
